Population Location, Age Structure and Gender Ratio

Reasons behind Demographics

Why is Argentina’s population distributed so unevenly?

Buenos Aires is so populated because that is where the settlers first came in and ever since, there hasn’t been a good enough reason for everyone to move, so most people have just stayed. Also, since 1950 there has been a lot of rural people moving to to the city to earn more money. Many people immigrated from other countries to the cities of Argentina for the same reason. Some ended up living in apartments and others in highly populated slums.

The bottom isn’t so populated because it’s cold, so cold that the average for some of the southern provinces are down to 5 degrees Celsius.

Why is there an ageing Demographic?

Argentina the third oldest country in Latin America. The reasons for Argentina’s ageing demographic include:

  • Increased life expectancy

In 1950 life expectancy was 62.2 years and this is expected to increase up to 81.4 years by 2050 in Argentina. This is due to improved standard of living, healthcare, housing and nutrition. It is also due to advances in modern medicine and technology.

  • Decreased birth rate

Improved education and family planning have reduced the birth rate.

Why are there more women than men?

The natural gender ratio at birth often tends to be around 105. This means that on average, there are 105 males for every 100 females at birth. In some countries like Argentina though, there is still a higher ratio of women to men. This is because men are at a higher risk of dying. This is not only due to physical differences, but also due to higher risks taken by men. They are prone to having accidents and injuries, because they tend to do work in more physical jobs. Testosterone also makes men do riskier things and sometimes become violent towards one another.
